WVU.Encrypted Wireless on your iPhone or iPod Touch

February 18th, 2009 by Steven Marra

In this post we’ll cover, step by step, setting up your Apple device to access this convenient, campus-wide wireless network:

WVU.Encrypted is preferred for WVU faculty, staff, and students who use the wireless on a regular basis. The encrypted network eliminates any concerns about wireless eavesdropping. Instructions for setting up a computer to access the Encrypted Wireless are here.

Checklist:

-A 2nd generation iPhone or iPod Touch, or a 1st generation iPhone or iPod Touch with the latest system update installed (version 2.2).

- You’ll need your Master ID username and password. If you don’t know yours, start here
http://oit.wvu.edu/masterid/

- Make sure your device has an active connection to the internet.

  1. Go to Settings
    settings
  2. Select Wi-Fi
    1settings
  3. Choose Other…
    5other1
  4. The Name of the network is WVU.Encrypted
    2wvu_encrypted
  5. Security is WPA2 Enterprise
    3wpa2_enterprise
  6. Your Username and Password are your Master ID and Master ID Password4username_password
  7. After you enter your Username and Password, select Join

  8. It may take a moment, but your device should connect to the WVU.Encrypted network *if* it is available in your location

Steve.. as we discussed, this unfortunately didn’t work for my 1st generation iPhone, even with the latest software updates.

But WVU.MountainAir does work fine. Also as I mentioned, I bought an app, AutoWifi, that manages automatic logins for wifi hot spots that have web based logins. AutoWiFi handles the MountainAir login without problem. I haven’t tried it with any other places in town.

For anyone interested AutoWifi can be found in the App Store as a free lite version and a $1.99 paid version:

Thanks for posting the info, Bob!

Accessing WVU.Encrypted works better on 2nd generation, 3G iPhones.

I’m not sure why.

*And*, even though 3G iPhones connect more reliably, it’s not perfect… and connectivity may vary from location to location.

After talking to some 3G iPhone users, reception of University wireless networks appears to be much harder to latch on to than it is with an iPod Touch.

I’m forwarding this info to the Network Services group. They might have additional information.

I’ll post more as I learn more.
